VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) is the largest international R&D centre for applied research in Northern Europe with staff of 2600 and turnover M€279. VTT has 70 years of experience in addressing the needs of industry and the knowledge-based society. One of the three business areas of VTT is Solutions for Natural Resources and Environment (SONE) including almost 700 persons and divided further into five Research Areas. SONE’s Industrial biotechnology Research Area with 130 employees will be involved in US4GreenChem. VTT has a strong interest in development of sustainable Biorefinery concepts and VTT is one of the leading institutes in Europe in the field of White Biotechnology. VTT has been pioneering especially in enzymology and protein engineering of fungal (hemi)cellulases, in improvement of Trichoderma reesei as an enzyme production and screening host, and in metabolic engineering of various fungal hosts for production of chemicals such as bioethanol and organic acids. VTT collaborates extensively in these fields in Europe and globally with academia and industry.
